As we start the new year, I’m sharing these Sonoma County fall family portraits from our own family’s outing in the Kenwood, California vineyards back in December.
My wife and I took our two young kids through the twisted vines, which were still dotted with the year’s last red and orange leaves under that beautiful sunset glow.
The Best Time For Fall Vineyard Portraits In Sonoma County
To have your portrait session captured during the peak of leaf senescence, plan for a session between late November or early December. These photos were captured on December 11th, 2025 and were among the very last of the leaves on any of the vines in the Sonoma Valley.
If you prefer the look of fruiting vines it would be better to aim for capturing your family photos sometime in September. It depends on the varietal and exact location but this is generally when the fruit is most developed shortly before harvest.
Good Locations in Sonoma County For Fall Vineyard Portraits
Jack London State Park, and Bartholomew both welcome the public and have vineyards and other flattering backgrounds. I can also arrange for private access to vineyards in Oakville for views of the Napa Valley. The photos in this post were captured with permission on private property along Hwy 12 in Kenwood.
Color Coordinating Photos for Fall Portraits In a Vineyard
Jewel tones, along with colors like those of the vine leaves in yellow, orange, and red, are always a good decision. Earth tones like greens and browns can also work well.
Make sure to wear boots or other sturdy shoes instead of flats or heels, not only to have a more enjoyable experience but also so your outfit make more sense with the location of your photos.
