As a Napa children’s portrait photographer, I adore the magic of wildflower backgrounds that appear in early spring! In this blog post, we’ll dive into creative ideas for children’s portraits in Napa (like this wildflower shoot) that will truly make your photos stand out.
Not only that, but we’ll also discuss the importance of capturing family portraits at the same time as your kids’ pictures to ensure you get some nice, high quality photos of the whole family together. In this post I’d like to share my approach to creating unforgettable portraits that will fill your home with smiles and memories for years to come!
How To Get The Best Children’s Portraits From Your Session
As a Napa children’s portrait photographer, I believe that capturing kids in their natural element is a very compelling way to create unforgettable portraits. To help you get the best photos possible from your photoshoot you plan out the following:
Plan A Fun Activity
Consider bringing your children to a fun location where they can play and be themselves. For example, you could have a photoshoot with bubbles in a mustard field (like we did in this post), a day at the beach with a shovel, or even just enjoying a yummy ice cream treat at the park. The key is to let them enjoy the moment while I’m there to capture their genuine reactions and emotions.
Dress Them Up in Cute Outfits
Another essential aspect of creating stunning portraits is selecting the perfect outfits for your little ones. Consider the backdrop and how their clothes will complement the scenery. In the mustard field photoshoot featured in this post, we dressed my son in blue stripe overalls and a muddy yellow shirt, which harmonized beautifully with the vibrant greens and yellows of the mustard field. If this sounds daunting, don’t worry I’ll help you out in the planning stages of your photoshoot!
Plan Ahead for Success
To ensure your child is in the best mood for the photoshoot, time the session for when they are well-fed and fully energized from a good nap. A happy, well-rested child is more likely to cooperate and provide those precious candid moments that make their portraits truly special.
Bring Along Fun Props
To enhance the experience, bring along props that your child will adore, like bubbles, a soccer ball, a stomp rocket, a kite, or any other exciting toys they’d have a blast playing with. These props will not only keep your child entertained but also result in genuinely joyful, candid photos.
Include the Whole Family
Lastly, don’t forget to include mom, dad, and any siblings in the photos for a complete family portrait. To create a harmonious visual effect, make sure you color-coordinate your outfits, as suggested in this blog post or check out adobe color to create your own custom color theme. Coordinating colors helps create a cohesive look and allows your family’s connection to shine through in the images.
Since you’re already having portraits captured of your kid(s) I’d highly recommend including the rest of the family in at least a few group portraits to capture the whole family together. By including the entire family in your children’s portrait session, you’ll be able to capture the essence of your family’s bond and create images that you’ll cherish for a lifetime.
