The Daily Adventures of an Accident Prone Toddler

Presently, hardly a day goes by where my son doesn’t crash test dummy himself in new and exciting ways I’d previously not conceived. To add to the excitement of his new hobby, he’s also made the creative decision to occasionally get so worked up that he’ll hold his breath and pass out after parkouring onto his face.

Apparently this is an inherited trait as my mom has told me all my life about how I’d get worked up about something when I was his age and hold my breath until I blacked out. I have no memory of any of this and used to just think she was being dramatic. Karma’s a son of a bitch like that. I’m not joking. The other day he decided to practice a new move and fell right onto his eye.

Thankfully the edge of the coffee table was there to catch his fall so he could acquire a new shiner to show off to the ladies. When he did this, he fell down and started to cry so hard that sound stopped coming out. good times.

Our Wildflower Adventure: Toddler Portraits in Santa Rosa

None the less, my wife and I still love his dumb face and both of us thought it would be nice to get some portraits of him in the wild flowers which explode around our house this time of year. Not only do they bloom naturally in the fields, but vineyards also plant them between the rows as a gorgeous, natural weed control. It’s staggeringly gorgeous, and both of us thought it would make for a fantastic (if not kind of hilarious) setting for our little cage fighter.

So we scouted some areas the day before and settled on a quiet field located on Hwy 12 between Santa Rosa and Kenwood. There, we’d try to catch some sunset portraits of our white goblin in the field among the mustard the following evening. When we got out there the following day I tried a few things that frankly didn’t work at all. He cried and refused to be placed in front of my strobe. I’m pretty sure that at one point he yelled at me in Klingon that he was NOT a prop.

Why Santa Rosa is Ideal for Mustard Field Toddler Portraits

The rolling hills and blooming landscapes here offer endless variety. From experience I’ve noticed that the best fields tend to move around every year. In fact the field in this photo shoot was pathetic the following year when we considered shooting here again. Therefore, it’s a good idea to not get married to any one spot and simply find the good patches when the time comes. Choosing the right spots not only provide stunning visuals but also plenty of space for kids to run and play, making sessions feel effortless and fun. This is the ideal method for parents seeking authentic children’s portraits.

The Challenges of Toddler Photography

All kidding aside, shooting through flowers and into direct sunlight can be tricky from a technical reasons, but the real adventure comes with the toddler factor. The best approach for parents? Ensure your little one is well-napped and fed before the session—that way, they’re in the best mood to explore. Then, just find a safe, open space like a wildflower field where they can be kids and run around freely. Toddlers rarely listen to directions, so capturing them candidly is key; those genuine moments of laughter, curiosity, and even the occasional tumble make for the most heartfelt photos.

Tips for Parents Booking Children’s Portraits

For successful outdoor sessions with young children, keep things light and playful. Bring your child’s favorite snacks or toys to keep energy high, and choose comfortable outfits that stylize well with the yellow and green field. Personally I like sky blue as an earth tone play and or neutral tones to separate them from the background. You can learn more about these techniques in my post about how to color coordinate outfits for photos.

Aside from that the other thing I’d really recommend is to embrace the unpredictability; the candid shots often become family favorites, turning a simple outing into genuine memories.
